Hospitality as welcoming culture and openness towards innovation and change. A subject especially relevant for NABA, used to explore the continuous mutations of identities, territories, forms of life and communication, through creative practices such as visual arts, fashion and design.

Briefing

We are witnessing today a period of very rapid mutations and changes. A period of transition towards a future to be built from the fragments of contemporary age. Beside all differences and heterogeneities, the primary space of everyday life, the domestic
space, is reflecting the evolution of global society towards a higher level of complexity, heterogeneity, flexibility. We like to consider the domestic space as the most intimate
and important place for our lives. How can it react, smoothly or radically, to the process of transformation of the world where we are living? A domestic space is defined in terms of relationship between private and public, individual and collective, inclusion and exclusion, hospitality and isolation.
What is your idea of a home projected towards the future? We would like you to think at the thresold of a domestic space.
It is not just a perimeter, or a limit, or simply an enclosure. It is a layer of communication, transparency and opacity, insulation and isolation, movement inward and outward, flows of bodies, information, energy, personalities, light, bacteria, etc.
We ask you to design the thresold of a domestic space conceived as the entrance to a place of hospitality, a device of interchange between inside and outside and between host and guest. You can consider any kind of domestic space of your choice (your own house, an apartment, a friend’s place, a sultan’s mansion, a roulotte, a space-craft, a submarine, a tent in a refugee camp, a hotel room, an hospital ward, etc.) in its own
location. You have to define the meaning of the thresold of the space in terms of relationship between the inhabitant(s), the guest(s) and the external context.
It is up to you the decision whether this relationship is of positive or negative kind, as well as the degree of openness and closeness, introversion and extroversion, and technological innovation. An active layer for exclusion and/or inclusion. Hospitality
and/or inhospitality. Isolation and/or togetherness. Intimacy and/or sharing. Pessimism and/or optimism. Free from any conventional constraint, the space in-between these dichotomies is the area for your project.
